weekly update 10.24-27

I hope you all are as excited as I am for parent teacher conferences, next week!  I have many wonderful things to tell you about your child!!  Thank you to Mr. Ackerman, who chaperoned our field trip.  We had a wonderful time at the Old Courthouse and visiting the Arch.  Check out the blog for pictures.  I should have them posted by Saturday night :)
This is what's going on next week:

Spelling- Blue group is testing on Thursday.  Green group is 15 syllable and affixes and yellow is 4 within words and blue is 22 within words on spellingcity.com
Social Studies-  We're finishing up chapter 5 (Early Settlers).  We will study how to read a time line and we will review all the concepts and vocabulary that we learned in chapter 5.  The test will be the following week.
Math- We are working with money.  We're making change from $5(subtracting money), adding money amounts, comparing different amounts of money with less than, greater than, and equal to signs.  You can access computer math games from my class blog.  The students have been playing them in class. Chapter 6 test will be early next week.
Science- We didn't get to our quiz this week, so we will take it on Tuesday.  Then we will review the entire unit and they will take a unit test (without the book) the following week.
Reading- We are discussing how schema helps us become better readers.  Students will:
*activate relevant prior knowledge before, during, and after reading
*decide if they need additional background information about the topic
*use their schema to enhance their understanding and provide a framework for learning new information
Writing- We are studying how writers use VOICE in their writing to change the purpose or meaning of their written work.  Students will write short pieces using various voices this week.
